Wilding conifer research

Preventing spread

Project description

Develop both short-to-medium- and long-term tools for preventing or significantly reducing spread of Douglas fir or other conifer species from planted forests.

‘Winning against wildings’
– funded by Ministry for Business and Innovation

Research team lead: Brian Richardson

Specific research topics

Identify Douglas fir genotypes with low spread potential characterised and identified (heavy seed, low fecundity).

Work out how to successfully propagate Douglas fir clones from existing cryo-preserved line (for later use in propagating either low-spread or sterile plants that may be later identified.

Wind modelling to better support plantation establishment and design to prevent future spread.
